Bioenergetic Breathing is a Breathwork modality that originated as part of Alexander Lowen’s Bioenergetic Analysis, which again is based on the works of Wilhelm Reich and Carl Jung.
The technique involves strong, full, regular, and deep breathing that induces a kind of controlled hyperventilation with the goal of creating an altered state of consciousness and heightened form of awareness, while giving access to the subconscious in order to reveal personal habits, suppressed and repressed emotions, and limitations.
The breathing practice itself is carried out as a type of Conscious Connected Breathing during which you gradually speed up the breathing rhythm (while still performing full inhales and full exhales), but then with the mouth and throat kept wide open.
It’s thought that Bioenergetic Breathing can lead to dearmoring and Catharsis, thereby purging emotional inhibitions and trauma and stimulating positive psychological change for the participant.
