Body De-Armouring — or in American English written as Dearmoring — has become a widely used form of emotional and trauma release, practiced by an increasing number of somatic psychologists and massage and bodywork therapists.

The theory of Emotional or Character Armouring and subsequent De-Armouring was pioneered by the Austrian psychoanalyst Wilhelm Reich (1897 – 1957), and is a way of explaining often unconscious physical tensions and restrictions in the body as a reaction to suppressed or repressed traumatic emotional and psychological experiences.

Reich’s work led to the birth of Body Psychotherapy — aka Body-oriented Psychotherapy or Somatic Psychology — a field of Mind-Body therapies that aim at healing physical, emotional, mental, and sexual injuries and traumas through body awareness, massage, bodywork, talk therapy, exercise and movement.
