Conversion Therapy is the (mostly outdated) practice of attempting to change a person’s sexual orientation, romantic orientation, gender identity, or gender expression in order to align it with heterosexual and gender binary societal norms.

The idea behind Conversion Therapy is that occurrences like same-sex attractions, gender diversity, and gender non-conformity are illnesses that need to be cured.

Various methods have been used, which include brain surgery, surgical or hormonal castration, electric shocks, drugs, hypnosis, counseling and coaching, spiritual interventions, visualization, and psychoanalysis, among others.

Today, there’s broad scientific consensus that Conversion Therapy is ineffective, and moreover, that it usually causes long-term psychological damage for the person involved. In fact, the current scientific stance is that phenomena like homosexuality, bisexuality, and gender diversity are natural and healthy aspects of human sexuality.

At any rate, when Conversion Therapy is performed today it’s typically considered fraud, abuse, cruel, and inhumane, and contrary to human rights. Moreover, a growing number of countries around the world have passed laws against Conversion Therapy.
