The Ekgakraohm herbal steam bath is a Thai steam treatment with selected herbs performed for women in the postpartum period. The treatment is typically done in a portable or fixed steam room.

The herbs commonly used are:

  • Phlai (Zingiber Montanum or Zingiber Cassumunar) to help relieve muscle stress,
  • Khamin Chan (Curcuma Longa or Turmeric) to help heal the perinea and vaginal canal,
  • Ma Grud (Citrus Hystrix or Kaffir Lime) to assist the respiratory system,
  • Tamarind leaves against itching, and
  • Curcuma Zanthorrhiza (Javanese Turmeric) which can prevent metritis (inflammation of the wall of the uterus ), help involution of the uterus, and expel lochia (i.e. the vaginal discharge after giving birth).

All of these herbs are boiled in hot water in a closed chamber, steam room, or (portable) tent. The steam and the volatile substances released come in contact with the body and are also inhaled.

Apart from the health benefits mentioned above, other advantages are reduction of fatigue, improvement of blood circulation (notably in the uterus and perineal area), promotion of sweating (detox) and weight loss, stimulation of breast milk production, and reduction of breast engorgement.

Usually, the woman sits for about half an hour in the herbal steam room or tent over a five to seven day period, combining sessions with Thai Massage after having taken the steam bath.
