Gender Dysphoria Explained

The term Gender Dysphoria refers to the severe psychological discomfort or distress that results from incongruence between one’s biological sex assigned at birth (usually either male or female, man or woman) and one’s actual gender identity.

Mind that Gender Dysphoria is not related to sexual orientation. That is, people who experience Gender Dysphoria may identify as straight, gay, lesbian or bisexual, etc.

Gender Dysphoria may involve several symptoms, such as depression, anxiety, self-neglect, impulsive and risky behavior, low self-esteem, and social isolation, typically because of body dissatisfaction. Mind that Gender Dysphoria cannot be treated trough “positive Talk Therapy.” However, it’s important to note that not all gender diverse individuals experience Gender Dysphoria.

People who experience Gender Dysphoria may want to change their body or body’s appearance through Gender Affirming Care, which could involve procedures such as Hormone Replacement Therapy, Gender Affirming Surgery, and/or Nonsurgical Gender Affirming practices.
