Massage Therapy | Gas, Farts, and Vaginal Air

Massage therapy often comes with quite some specific sounds and noises. That is, the receiver may burp, moan, whimper, snore, groan, wail, giggle, and whatnot, or even pass gas, farts, or vaginal air.

Notably the latter phenomena — breaking gas, farting, and releasing vaginal air — can cause embarrassment or feelings of shame for the receiver — and, of course, even more so if there’s a certain smell to one’s airy products.

Nevertheless, it’s a perfectly natural thing that regularly happens during massage sessions, especially with those massages that apply abdominal techniques and/or a lot of stretches.

In fact, it’s about those massage techniques that go deeper, move the body and body parts around, or manipulate internal organs and — directly or indirectly — stimulate the digestive tract.

Another cause can be the relaxation of certain muscles, such as the anal sphincter muscles and/or the vaginal muscles, which then allow gas and wind to pass easier.

Actually, we can apply certain techniques ourselves when we feel bloated or have pain caused by excessive gas or air in our stomach or intestines. We can use a range of poses, asanas, and/or bodily positions to get rid of those.

For instance, the Yoga Child’s Pose Balasana (see the image displayed below) is a well-known yogic technique to release gas from the intestines.

Moreover, a therapist may apply abdominal massage therapy explicitly aimed at getting relief of gas and excessive air from the gastrointestinal tract, which is, for instance, a very common practice applied for babies.

In any case, massage therapists will certainly not frown if you release gas, wind, or air; they are very much used to it. By contrast, a therapist will often already beforehand inform you that “some noises” may come about during the session. In the end, it’s not only completely normal and common, it’s healthy and beneficial for the body.
