Nuru gel — sometimes also called Nuru oil — is a viscous, slimy, odorless, colorless, and transparent gel used as a lubricant in an erotic Nuru Massage, the latter also called Nuru Body Slide Massage. It facilitates easy, sensual, intimate, and smooth gliding and sliding during unclothed body-to-body contact.
In fact, a Nuru Massage without the use of Nuru gel wouldn’t be a genuine Nuru Massage because it’s notably the Nuru gel that heightens sensitivity and provides the typical erotic and slippery experience within a session. In addition, the gel differs from normal massage oils in that it has a high viscosity and stays slippery significantly longer.
Having said that, let’s explore what exactly the ingredients, properties, and benefits are of Nuru gel (or Nuru Massage oil).
Nuru Gel Ingredients, Properties, and Health Benefits
Traditionally, the main ingredients in Nuru gel are seaweed extract and water, typically Nori seaweed extract, which is edible seaweed that has been used in Japanese cuisine for centuries. Nevertheless, alternatively other types of seaweed extracts may be used, such as Fucus Vesiculosus, Sargassum, and Carrageenan.
The process of making traditional Nuru gel is rather simple: soak the seaweed in water overnight, rinse until the water is clear, blend the seaweed until it’s smooth and slimy, while adding water to obtain your preferred consistency.
In addition, other ingredients may be added, such as Aloe Vera, Azulene, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf, Camelia Sinensis, Chamomile, Glycyrrhiza Glabra Root (Liquorice), and Grapefruit seed or Grapeseed extract to enhance skin moisturizing (hydration), nutritive, elastic, toning, anti-inflammatory, healing, revitalizing and relaxing properties, or to promote muscle relaxation.
Traditional seaweed-based Nuru gel is rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, and beneficial for the skin making it soft and supple. It’s a 100% natural i.e. organic mixture, flavor and fragrance free, and it doesn’t stick, stain, or damage clothing and linen, but do mind that extra ingredients added to the gel may alter the original characteristics.
As for the latter, much depending on the Nuru gel brand (ready made gels or in powder form) you will find that different ingredients and/or conservatives are used — some natural and other chemical — including a variety of carrier and/or essential oils. Think of ingredients such as Propylene Glycol, (vegetable) Glycerin, Xanthan gum, Sorbitol, PEG-45M, PEG-90M, Gluconolactone, Sodium Benzoate, Tetrasodium Glutamate Diacetate, Aluminum Hydroxide, Lactic Acid, Diazolidinyl Urea, Parabens, Ethylhexylglycerin, and Phenoxyethanol.
Popular essential oils added may include Lavender, Chamomile, Tea Tree, Grapeseed, or Ylang-Ylang essential oil. Popular carrier oils used (also called base oils) may be Coconut, Almond, and Grapeseed oil. Mind that both essential and carrier oils may stain or make the Nuru gel become sticky.
All by all, either natural or chemical, it’s very important to be sure that one isn’t allergic for the ingredients of the Nuru gel, and it’s advised to always check on the type of compounds and/or test some gel on a small piece of your skin (or partner’s skin) — on the inside of your arm or inner thigh, for instance — before using it on your entire body.
How to Use Nuru Gel
Most types of Nuru gel are water-soluble — both the ones that are ready for use or in powder form — which means that they can be mixed with water to achieve your preferred consistency. The ready for use Nuru gels may be available in a concentrated form to be mixed with water or alternatively to be used as is.
The gel is preferably used warm, which is more pleasant and also more sensual when spread or poured on the bodies of the giver and receiver. Warming the gel can be done by placing a bottle or bowl of gel in warm water or by using an electric massage gel warmer. It depends very much on the duration of a Nuru Massage and on how much Nuru gel you spread on each other’s bodies, but it’s not uncommon to be needing 0,5 to 1 liter of Nuru gel for a session.
Mind that, apart from their bodies, Nuru Massage practitioners also use their hands to give the massage or to spread the gel to optimally prepare the skin for smooth full-body contact. The many sliding and gliding motions in Nuru Massage additionally help spreading the gel evenly over the entire body.
Some types of Nuru gel can be applied directly on the skin, but most gels give better results if the skin is wetted beforehand. Typically, the Nuru gel manufacturer will add this to the instructions of use. In any case, Nuru gel is always generously used to achieve optimum full-body sliding and gliding.
An extra word of caution: if irritation occurs of your skin because of the gel, you should discontinue use and consult a professional healthcare provider. If Nuru gel spills on the floor, the surface can become very slippery, meaning that if you don’t pay attention and clean it up, you may slip, fall, and hurt yourself.
