Yoga during the pregnancy period, typically called Prenatal Yoga or Pregnancy Yoga, is a rather well-known activity for pregnant women and practiced all around the world.
This type of Yoga mainly consists of exercises that keep the body in shape and supply it with energy, give relief to the back, strengthen legs and pelvic floor muscles, and battle constipation, bloating, and swelling, among other conditions and discomforts related to the pregnancy period.
As a rule, Prenatal Yoga is a gentle exercise and concentrates on Asanas (Yoga poses) — sometimes adapted — that are specifically beneficial for pregnant women. Additionally, the practice may also contain breathing exercises to optimally prepare the mother for childbirth.
If there are no contraindications given by a gynecologist or physician, Prenatal Yoga can be done during all months of the pregnancy. Nevertheless, if new exercises are added to the curriculum it’s always wise to check with a healthcare professional if they can be done safely, that is, performed without harming one’s body or the baby.
