Taoist Breathing Practices

In esoteric Taoism, notably in Neigong, Neidan Inner Alchemy, Taoist meditation, and in the Taoist Sexual Practices (Fang Zhong Shu), one can find a broad range of conscious breathing practices aimed at working with and cultivating Qi Life Force.

The number of Taoist breathing techniques and exercises is rather large, and includes, for instance, Tao Yin Breathing, Taoist Reverse Breathing, Dantian Breathwork, Ovarian Breathing, Taixi Embryonic Breathing, Testicle Breathing, Turtle or Tortoise Breathing, Circular Breathing, Bone Breathing, Spinal Breathing, and several breathing techniques integrally found in Qigong and Tai Chi Chuan.

In a more general sense, one could say that Taoist breathing techniques strongly focus on attaining longevity, self-realization, or even immortality, achieving psychic and magical powers, and promoting physical, emotional, and spiritual strength and healing.
