Traditional Chinese Medicine or TCM originated more than 2,000 years ago in China. The healing methods may be classified into five distinct parts: movement theory Tai Chi and Qigong, nutrition theory, herbalism, Tuina therapy (massage, acupressure, and additional techniques, such as moxibustion, cupping, and Guasha), and acupuncture.

A main characteristic of TCM is that it’s primarily focused on illness prevention, and in a lesser degree on healing. The core aim is to maintain and promote good health through a moderate and balanced lifestyle.

A TCM Doula, also called an Acu-Doula, is commonly a Birth Doula or Full Spectrum Doula who’s likewise a licensed TCM practitioner. In fact, this type of Doula may first have been a TCM therapist who got interested in Doula work, or alternatively a Doula who later on studied TCM natural health practices.

In any case, the TCM Doula combines traditional Doula services with acupressure, Tuina Massage, and acupuncture treatments to promote health of pregnant women and prepare them for a safe and natural approach to labor and delivery.

In addition, acupressure, massage, acupuncture, TCM nutritional guidance and herbal treatments can also be offered in the postpartum period to speed-up recovery of the birth mother. In the latter case, the Doula is likewise a Postpartum Doula (or Full-Spectrum Doula).
