The guide (teacher) may be there in person, or supports the participant remotely through written text, sound recording, live streams, music, verbal instruction, video, guided imagery (visualizations), and/or audiovisual media.

Guided Meditation is in a lesser degree used for spiritual attainment purposes, but rather as a therapeutic tool to lowering stress and anxiety levels, reducing asthma, physical pains, insomnia, anger, and negative thinking, but also to improve coping skills, concentration and focus, and generals feeling of wellbeing.

A well-known and popular form of Guided Meditation is practiced through Nidra Yoga, but Yogic chanting and Kirtan Yoga may also be carried out as a form of Guided Meditation.
